The AmeriCorps/Easter Seals Wisconsin PartnershipAmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency that connects Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities and their nation through a network of partnerships with nonprofit groups. (Please visit AmeriCorps.org for details about the national program.) In July 2004, Easter Seals Wisconsin was honored by the National Community Service Board with a renewable grant to recruit, train and supervise AmeriCorps members serving at Camp Wawbeek and Respite Camp. Last year, 125 AmeriCorps members worked directly with campers. All had an eagerness to work with people with disabilities; most were pursing careers in related fields like physical or occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation and nursing. AmeriCorps members who serve at Camp Wawbeek and Respite Camp have willing spirits that provide the support that allows Easter Seals to expand its programming and to serve additional campers and their families. AmeriCorps members provide ideas, plan and lead programs, and assist campers to participate fully in activities such as canoeing, crafts, sports, swimming, ropes course, skits and campouts. Members also complete a service project and engage in team-building activities. AmeriCorps members serving Camp Wawbeek and Respite Camp receive thorough training in caring for and interacting with people who have mild to severe disabilities, including providing personal care and encouraging and aiding participation in social and recreational activities. Members are also trained in CPR, first aid, conflict resolution and civic participation. This training prepares AmeriCorps members to give each camper the best possible experience. While serving at Camp Wawbeek and Respite Camp, AmeriCorps members receive room and board in addition to a living allowance. Upon successful completion of all training and service requirements, AmeriCorps members also receive an education award that can be used to help pay for college or toward repayment of existing student loans.
